Panthera leo better known as the Lion. One of my favourite animal experiment paintings, For the fur sections I bled colour tones of oranges, reds and yellows to create a firey autumn skin. The mane was a bit more challenging and took time as I painted each hair section individually using a thin brush and built up layers of colour to create depth.

Being the ultimate apex predator is not always what it is cracked up to be. This elderly male Mara lion (Panthera leo) in his declining years sports a closed injured eye, is infested with small insects and has none of the demeanour one might expect of the King of Beasts in his pomp. Just another day on the African savanna for this beautiful male lion. Well that is what I hoped to portray with this composite of a lion I took in The Lakes Zoo blended with a few of my textures in Photoshop CC and Topaz Clarity.

The white lion is occasionally found in wildlife reserves in South Africa and is a rare colour mutation of the Kruger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri). It has been perpetuated by selective breeding in zoos around the world. White lions are not yet a separate subspecies and they have been said to be indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was 1938.
