Panthera leo better known as the Lion. One of my favourite animal experiment paintings, For the fur sections I bled colour tones of oranges, reds and yellows to create a firey autumn skin. The mane was a bit more challenging and took time as I painted each hair section individually using a thin brush and built up layers of colour to create depth.

Being the ultimate apex predator is not always what it is cracked up to be. This elderly male Mara lion (Panthera leo) in his declining years sports a closed injured eye, is infested with small insects and has none of the demeanour one might expect of the King of Beasts in his pomp. The eyes are totally focused on the herd as he moves slowly forward through the long dry grass. It's been a while since his last meal and he wants to get as close as he can before they see him. Just another day on the African savanna for this beautiful male lion. Well that is what I hoped to portray with this composite of a lion I took in The Lakes Zoo blended with a few of my textures in Photoshop CC and Topaz Clarity.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the family Felidae and a member of the genus Panthera. It has a muscular, deep-chested body, short, rounded head, round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions have a prominent mane. With a typical head-to-body length of 184–208 cm (72–82 in) they are larger than females at 160–184 cm (63–72 in). It is a social species, forming groups called prides. A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions usually hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates.
