In the '60s, chromed factory steel wheels had taken the shows and streets by storm. Fat-fendered radical customs with their chopped tops, sectioned bodies and other extensive modifications were falling out of favor, with radically painted late model cars now dominating the world of customs. It was around this time that several manufacturers saw that an affordably priced custom wheel was something that the hot rod and custom world desperately needed. Gardenia, California's Astro Custom Wheels was one of the many builders who threw their hat into the ring, making wheels that were equal parts show and go, so you could cruise the boulevard on Friday night, but tear up the quarter mile on Saturday morning.

This was the place where deep into the night Balchowsky built his superbly engineered 'junkyard' creations, the most famous being his 'Old Yeller' cars that famously put Maseratis Ferraris and Scarabs to the sword on road races throughout California in the fifties and early sixties.
