The sound of the Minster bells is loud, throbbing almost, as though the air were alive and the ground vibrating, echoing and awakening childhood memories of half a century earlier. I love it here, my birth town, the place where my life began, the crucible of my earliest consciousness. I went to school here, had my first birthday cakes and Christmases here. It was my small world, safe and English and nice. The work is rich in light and colour, yet simple too. A wonderful souvenir of Yorkshire.

This square work depicts architecture in Edinburgh’s New Town, a place I have grown up with, dipping in and out, visits, periods of residence, and in daydreams and memories. Hot, Scottish summers of childhood, tea and buttery scones in venues long gone, errands run, books bought, and buses caught. There is an Athenian timelessness about it, a sense of history and high culture that permeates the sandstone and rock, that whispers from patches of shadow and coolth. A favourite view of Hull, memories of childhood, the thrill of seeing derelict docks, the sinister smoothness of shiny mud and the rotting wooden supports. The half-buried remains of bike wheels and shopping trolleys. And from this sprang the glass and metal shopping centre, its glass reflecting the sky, the walkway drawing us upwards, holding us above the darkness. I am old enough to remember the Grassmarket as dark, insalubrious, filled with the ghostly magic of times past. It is different now, lighter, brighter, cleaner. Still, it is a place of great historical significance, a feeling of wonder as we look up at the castle, erstwhile fortress, dungeon and palace all at once. From all angles history infuses the air, with the spirit of bodysnatchers, Covenanters, witchery and the hangman’s rope. My walk took me further away from the heart of the New Town, past Scotland Street, and Broughton Street, down to an area of secret parks and gardens and streets that seem to have fallen off the grand design, ending suddenly in a wall of railings and trees. A certain austerity creeps in, a Scottish solidity, pure and simple and strong. I admire this block of flats, built of large chunks of stone, with high windows and high ceilings. I marvel at the softness of the colours on the interior walls, little triangles seen from the street. The sky too is pure, blue, deep, cool. I wanted to capture that light, and the golden colours. Where the New Town starts to end and Stockbridge approaches, where the hills are steep and the shadows long, I noticed the beautiful play of light and colour on this golden building. It was a perfect design of symmetry, Georgian, solid, with fan windows over the doors, and built of large blocks of stone. It was a perfect Edinburgh morning, a day of Scottish summer promised and delivered, the air tinged with pine and heather and brine. I wanted to capture that light. A quiet morning stroll in Edinburgh, as glorious sun captures the tops of the Scottish Baronial buildings. The streets are mine, private, to share only with my shadow and footsteps. I smell freshly ground coffee, baking, the tang of the sea, and the scent of Edinburgh waking up. A distant rumble of traffic, the impatient hoot of a train from beyond the limit of the long since vanished walls. I wanted to capture the way the light and colours play with each other, the brightness of the sky, and the delicious coolth of the street.

A favourite spot of Edinburgh, a row of purple-hued tenements hugging the edge of the Meadows, their shape and colour accentuated by the late afternoon sky, filled with pink swirls, clouds of marshmallow, candy floss and Turkish Delight. The sky and trees remind me of the western fringes of Scotland, where the air is scented with brine and seaweed and pine, a place of magic, of Celtic sorcery. As with most corners of Edinburgh there are jolts of memory too, of student parties decades ago, in large drawing room flats, wooden floors bedecked with threadbare imitation Persian rugs, old armchairs in garret windows with tantalizing views. I explore Bristol. From the river, on a solitary walk, a row of colorful houses catches my eye. There is something playful, childlike about them. The tones are bright, filled with light and hope, striking. The air is crisp, scents of brine and elderflower, and the sun warms me.
