Making collages is a craft I first found my creative flare in. I created this one by hand – as I do most. I wanted to give the image depth, I tried to create this by using different landscapes for the background, I also like that the central focus is facing “outwards”. French poet André Breton was a co-founder of surrealism and writer of its first manifesto. He was influenced by Dadaism and was one of the inventors of automatic writing, a method that widely opened the door to the subconscious.

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

This painting was commissioned by poet and Magritte patron Edward James and is considered a portrait of James although James' face is not depicted. This painting was one of three produced by Magritte for the ballroom of James' London home. The work depicts a man standing in front of a mirror, but whereas the book on the mantelpiece is reflected correctly, the man can see only the back of his head.
