Formerly a Benedictine monastery, work started on the current church in 1102, though the monastery may have been founded 500 years earlier. Just further upstream is the severn-Avon lock which enables boats to travel upriver towards Shakespeare's Stratford. This was a strategic position to b establish this ancient town as the two rivers act as a defensive moat. The Abbey Mill Weir on the River Avon at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is at the end of the navigable section of the Mill Avon, an extension to the River Avon constructed by the Abbey's monks in the C12th. This provided power for the Abbey Mill which at one time apparently had four wheels! The weir as we see it now helps control flood water and ithe sluices are controlled from the white building on the right of the image. The mill itself closed in 1921 and is now private apartments. Just to the left of the poicture is the Severn-Avon Lock allowing boats to pass from one river to the other. Further upriver can be seen King John's Bridge, a Grade 2 listed structure - and apparently if a boat can pass through this then it can manage all other bridges as far as Stratford Upon Avon! Although now residential, the mill started life in about 1190 asd the corn mill for the nearby abbey. It is said that the monks excavated the Mill Avon - joining further on with the River Severn - to drive the water wheel. A boat on the Mill Avon River at Tewkwsbury, Gloucestershire passing under Quay Bridge. This is a cast iron and sandstone structure dating from 1822 and is now Grade 2 listed. The Mill Avon dates way back to the C12th when Benedictine monks from nearby Tewkesbury Abbey diverted the course of the River Avon to turn the wheel of its water mill. Building started in 1102 and it was consecrated in 1121, housing a community of Benedictine monks.After the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII it became the parish church.
