Free Derry (Irish: Saor Dhoire) was a self-declared autonomous Irish nationalist area of Derry, Northern Ireland, that existed between 1969 and 1972, during the Troubles. It emerged during the Northern Ireland civil rights movement, which sought to end discrimination against the Irish Catholic/nationalist minority by the Protestant/unionist government. The civil rights movement highlighted the sectarianism and police brutality of the overwhelmingly Protestant police force, the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC).

Wall Mural Art

Margan and I have noticed several new murals adorning walls around downtown Bethesda in the last couple of weeks. This one is on a hot dog restaurant about two blocks from where we live. I like the idea of public art! Leica D-LUX 6

This is a picture I made during a trip to Berlin, Germany. It shows one of the many murals on the East side gallary Berlin wall. This piece was made by Gamil Gimajew.

A walk one morning around some of the streets in the City of Tegucigalpa. I came across this very long wall that was totally painted (top to bottom) with this one continuous colourful mural. This wall made up the length of about 4 houses tucked behind on some residential street on a hill. All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software. Pen drawing 2011. Three figures stand gazing at some happening not included in the picture. What are they observing? Their expressions are all subtly different, one verging on humour and another looking outraged! The mural in the background carries the usual urban graffiti but in this instance from another, earlier time. Where is this time trapped city and what's up? As always I'll leave you to decide!!

With a new baby in the family this got me thinking about big and small....

Exposition De Paires 1906 Balloon Mural

I don't know who the artist is who painted this or what the backstory is to this beautiful mural in Lagos depicting a young, presumable Portuguese woman. If you know, please leave a comment. Sadly, because of traffic I could not get a better angle either. Photo taken in Oct. 16 with a simple Canon A560.
