A remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, it is the largest of many salt flats west of the Great Salt Lake. Bonneville Speedway (also known as the Bonneville Salt Flats Race Track) is an area of the Bonneville Salt Flats northeast of Wendover, Utah, that is marked out for motor sports. The salt flats were first used for motor sports in 1912, but did not become truly popular until the '30s when Ab Jenkins and Sir Malcolm Campbell competed to set land speed records.

The first Human Powered Speed Championships event was held in 1975, and have been held annually ever since. The events have been held in numerous locations, but the championships have almost always been hosted in sunny southern California. 1983's event was held in Irvine at Orange County International Raceway, where riders on bicycles, tricycles, and quadcycles came from around the world to compete, with a tandem team clocking the weekend's top speed of 57.90 mph.

Russetta Timing Association (RTA) held speed meets at various southern California dry lakes, beginning in 1939 and continuing well into the 1960s. It was an independent association, owned by Ray Ingram, who also owned the clocks. It flourished in part because the more prominent SCTA did not allow coupes or sedans until 1951, and RTA did. In their early years, this made RTA somewhat of an 'outlaw' as the new kid on the block that brought together the clubs with guys running traditional hot rods and not necessarily dedicated dry lake racers.

Sir Michael Campbell in 'Bluebird' and Welshman John Godfrey Parry-Thomas in his Leyland Special BABS between them raised the record from 146 mph in 1924 to 174 mph in 1927. In a further attempt at breaking the record in 1927, Parry-Thomas's car crashed on a 170 mph run, and the driver lost his life.
