It was a hard life being a mill worker and conditions in Manchester and Leeds were harsh with poor health resulting from industrial pollution. CHILDREN were routinely employed as they were small and nimble. Titus Salt planned and built a new village to demonstrate what could be done to keep skilled and unskilled workers fit and healthy. Before Saltaire new "town"... Salt's 3,500 workers travelled to Saltaire from Bradford. However, during the next few years, 850 houses were built for his workers. Saltaire also had its own park, church, school, hospital, library and a whole range of different shops. The houses in Saltaire were far superior to those available in Bradford and other industrial towns. Fresh water was piped into each home...
