This design is a pencil drawing based on the Mondragone bust of Antinous, the favourite of the Roman emperor, Hadrian. Antinous died at the age of 18-20 while in a flotilla on the river Nile, though the exact circumstances of his death are unclear. Various theories have been put forward, ranging from accident, to murder, to voluntary human sacrifice. What is certain is that the grief-stricken Hadrian deified Antinous, who has been worshiped ever since. This giant bust is from one of his statues, and is now housed in the Louvre.
