There are many lovely views of Arundel, but one of my favourites is from the river near the station. The river is tidal at this point, so the brackish water is always a bit murky. There is a ice walk you can do from here heading upstream to the next road crossing (near Amberley), through the woods, and down into the town from the grounds around the castle. I've painted this view in oil on a 24x12 inch board based on photos I took on that walk.

This particular garden (The Collector Earl's Garden) was conceived as a tribute to Thomas Howard, the 14th Earl of Arundel (1585-1646), a notable English collector of paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, books and jewellery. Ancestral home of the Elven Knights of Arundel (sorry, made that bit up, sounds like something from Lord of the Rings, but I believe the following is true...). The restored mediaeval castle at Arundel (West Sussex, England) dominates the neighbouring town and the surrounding landscape. The castle was founded on Christmas Day in the year 1067 by Roger de Montgomery, the first Earl of Arundel, an honour bestowed on him by his cousin William the Conqueror. For the last 400 years the castle has been in the family of the Duke of Norfolk. Date: 28th October 2013.
