In the center of this image is the astrolabe. An astrolabe is an ancient tool used in solving problems that involve time and the position of the Sun and stars. Astrolabes can be used in timekeeping, surveying, geography, and astronomy to name a few disciplines. One of its most well-known uses is navigation.

This device dates back to 150 - 100 BC. It was found in a wreck near the island of Antikythera. It was used to track planets, the calendar and four yearly athletic games. Considered by many to be the first analogue computer. There is some suggestion that it was invented and built by Aristotle.
