Catherine Labouré entered the novitiate of the Daughters of Christian Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris in 1830. On the evening of November 27, 1830, Our Lady Mary spoke to Sister Catherine with the words "God wants to entrust you with a mission...". Mary shows Catherine a medal and instructs her to have one minted. From July 30, 1832, the first medals are distributed and handed out to the sick and needy. In the first four years alone, two and a half million were distributed. Due to the healings, conversions and mendings, the medal very soon received the nickname "Miraculous Medal".

Looking over the River Thames at Abingdon in Oxfordshire to the parish church of St Mary. Dating from the early C12th, it is notable for being the second widest church in England - having five aisles! Abingdon-on-Thames is a lovely ancient market town which although now in Oxfordshire was once the county town of Berkshire! From her the Thames makes its majestic way to Wallingford and from there to Reading before reaching London and ultimately the North Sea. This is a digital art image.

St Michaels Church, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland with the top of the Royal Palace of linlithgow just visible behind it. “St Michael is kinde to strangers”. So runs the motto of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. St Michael is the patron saint of the town and, in the form of the ancient church of that name, he still stands guard above its inhabitants, both residents and strangers alike. Although it is undoubtedly of earlier origin the first mention of “the great church of Linlithgow” is in a charter of 1138 in which King David I gifted it “with all its chapels, lands and other rights” to the Cathedral of St Andrews. On 22nd May 1242, the Church of St Michael of Linlithgow was consecrated.

This beautiful parish church with its distinctive white wooden belfry stands on the edge of the village surrounded by farmland overlooking the Kennet Valley.There seems to have been a chapel here in the 1100s which was apparently owned by nearby Reading Abbey but by 1240 it had become a church. The present building is largely 13th century with restoration carried out in the 15th and 19th centuries.

This very elegant tower is that of Santa Maria de la Alhambra which sits in a part of the Alhambra citadel which was once the medina - the old part of the Moorish city. It was built between 1581 and 1618. The image has a pastel finish.

The San Damiano Cross is the large Romanesque rood cross before which St. Francis of Assisi was praying when he is said to have received the commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church.

The Church of St Mary, East Quantoxhead, May 2021 The Grade 2 listed, Anglican church of St Mary, in the village of East Quantoxhead (Somerset, England) was built in the 14th century on the site of an earlier church building. The church is adjacent to the Court House, home to the lords of the manor. Restoration work took place in the 17th and 19th centuries. Date: 26th May 2021.

The stunning Ozleworth church, in the Cotswolds, reminiscent of Tuscany, is unusual in that it is one of only two churches in Gloucestershire with a hexagonal tower.

St Joseph, the Patron of the Universal Church, looks on with fatherly care over St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. In an arc over and around him is the Latin prayer, "Sancte Joseph, patrone S. Ecclesiae, ora pro nobis." In English, "St. Joseph, patron of the Holy Church, pray for us." To his left and right are symbols of papal heraldry. The smaller shield to the left is the papal escutcheon of Pope Pius IX, and the one to the right belongs to Pope Leo XIII.

Looking out from a window in the Alhambra Palace, in Granada, Spain to the tower of the church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra. We can see the Moorish architecture of the window with its patterned stonework contrasting with the later Christian church design. Both a citadel and a palace, the Alhambra was founded by Spain's Islamic rulers in 1238 and shows magnificent examples of medieval Moorish architecture. The image has a textured finish.

King David I of Scotland granted a charter for the establishment of the church in 1138. The church was built on the site of an older church and was consecrated in 1242. Following a fire in 1424, most of the present building dates from the mid 15th century, with extensive restorations in the 19th century. Parts of the Church of St Michael were brought into use as they were completed, and the church was completed in 1540. Built immediately to the south of Linlithgow Palace, the church was much favoured as a place of worship by Scottish Kings and Queens. Mary, Queen of Scots, was born in Linlithgow Palace on 8 December 1542 and was baptised in St Michael’s Church.
