On 16 September 1941, the 45th Infantry Division was federalized from state control into the regular army force. It was one of four National Guard divisions to be federalized, Assigned to the division were the 158th, 160th, 171st, and 189th Field Artillery Battalions. On 1 September 1950, the 45th Infantry Division was activated as the first National Guard division to be deployed to Korean War.

The 27th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the "Wolfhounds", is a unit of the United States Army established in 1901, that served in the Philippine–American War, in the Siberian Intervention after World War I, and as part of the 25th Infantry Division ("Tropic Lightning") during World War II, the Korean War, and later the Vietnam War.
