Early 20th Century Character Posters and Art Prints

This photograph was scanned from a glass slide in a box dated Cambridge 1911 and it was found after some research that the photos are depicting the annual may bumps rowing races on the river Cam in Cambridge. The races are open to all of the college boat clubs from the University of Cambridge, the University Medical and Veterinary Schools and Anglia Ruskin Boat Club. The May Bumps takes place over four days (running from the Wednesday to the Saturday) in mid-June despite the name and is run as a bumps race.

Rowing crew. Early 20th-century photograph of eight rowers and a coxswain rowing on a river. The oars are being used to push against the water, causing the boat to move in the opposite direction across the surface of the water. This is an example of Newton's Third Law, that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. To achieve controlled motion, the rowers have to co-ordinate the action of their oars, with the coxswain guiding the boat. These rowers are from the University of Cambridge, UK. The photograph, dating from circa 1911, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.

Alfons Maria Mucha also know internationally as Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), was a Czech graphic artist, painter and illustrator. He lived in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, and is best know for his noticeably stylized and decorative theatrical posters like those of Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in paris at the time. Mucha produced paintings, advertisements, book illustrations as well as designs for carpets, jewelry and theatre sets, in what was called the Mucha style. His works featured beautiful young women in neoclassical robes surrounded by flowers which formed as haloes.
