In the mid-twentieth century, there were not many South American female writers who received international acclaim. Maria Luisa Bombal (1910-1980) was one of them. Influenced by surrealism, she examined gender relations and expressed views that were considered feminist.

Georges Bataille was a French poet and novelist, but is better known as an intelectual whose philosophical, social and even economic theories had wide appeal and influenced the Western thought. One of his most famous books is La Part Maudite (The Accursed Share).
