The backwater as the Thames divides above the lock and weir at Goring on Thames in Oxfordshire. This was once the supply of water to the mill where it still rushes through the sluices to the wheel pit. Here, beside the boathouses lining the river bank, craft of all types are moored - now probably for the winter! In this view captured on a day in early October the lock keeper's cottage can be seen in the background.

Just approaching the lower (downstream) lock gates at Goring on Thames in Oxfordshire, England. The first lock here was a flash lock - paddles forming a dam which could be removed to provide a flow of water and let boats through. This gave the local mill a head of water to turn the wheel. The first pound lock was built in 1787 at a cost of £1000. The present lock was constructed in 1921. The Thames here flows between the Chiltern Hills and North Wessex Downs forming what is known as the Goring Gap. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The imposing gateway buildings at Raglan Castle in Monmouthshire, South Wales. This was built rather late for a castle being started by Sir William ap Thomas in the 1430s. His son, Sir William Herbert, a Knight of the Garter, continued building, creating a home rather than a fortress - though it looks formidable! Young Henry Tudor - later Henry VII was sent here to be brought up as a nobleman. During the Civil War the castle was taken by Parliamentary troops and began to fall into disrepair. The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. There had apparently been a place of worship here fron the C7th but it was a Norman, Robert FitzHarmon who founded this abbey. Building started in 1102 and it was consecrated in 1121, housing a community of Benedictine monks.After the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII it became the parish church. The tower which dominates the town is apparently the largest in England - and possibly Europe! Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Great Haseley Windmill in South Oxfordshire which looks out over the Thames Valley and the Chiltern Hills. This fine stone windmill started life in about 1760 as a corn mill attached to the local estate. It seems to have worked until the end of the First World War after which it fell into a state of neglect. However, in July 2009 a full restoration project began and in 2014 the new sais and fantail were fitted This is a tower or 'cap' mill, the top being turned to face the wind. A digital art view looking over Pontsticill Reservoir in Powis, South Wales. This is the view as seen from the woodland walk which circles round the lake, captured on a warm, cloudy day. It is situated on the south side of the Brecon Beacons National Park and is within the Fforest Fawr Geopark. Also known as the Taf Fechan Reservoir, it's 2.5 miles long and covers 102 hectares - approximately 252 acres. A great walk with superb views - finishing with a steam train ride back to Merthyr Tydfil.

The castle at Brecon (Aberhonddu) standing above the River Honddu close to where it flows into the River Usk. This was one of the first stone castles in Wales, built by Bernard de Neufmarche in 1093. The Welsh, however, destroyed the town in the 1100s and so a stone shell keep and outer walls were built by the early 1200s. The section in the image dates from c.1300. In 1645 Parliament captured the castle and slighted (razed) the walls to prevent future defensive use. A digital pencil drawing.

The scene at Hungerford Town Lock in late autumn produced in the style of a pencil drawing. The lock is no 74 on the Kennet and Avon Canal and is near the centre of the picturesque market town of Hungerford in West Berkshire - very near the border with Wiltshire. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. It fell into disuse but was completely restored and opened in 1990.

Approaching the bottom gate of Garston Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Theale in Berkshire, England, Only reachable on foot by the towpath it is close to a busy bridge carrying the M4! This is one of only two turf-sided locks still in existence on this waterway and is a Grade 2 listed construction. Part of the original Kennet Navigation between Reading and Newbury, it was constructed in 1718-23 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury. The entire canal was completed in 1810.

A narrow boat has just passed through Woolhampton lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal at Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. This lock was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was part of the Kennet Navigation - that is part river and part canal. The Kennet and Avon canal was constructed to join Bristol and London via Reading making the transport of goods smoother. It closed due to the Great Western Railway but was reopened in 1990.

This old vintage tram has suddenly appeared in the Albert Dock, I think it sells drinks. There seem to be a lot of these old vehicles about these days which have been given a new lease of life. It adds a colourful splash to the waterfront anyway, which I've enhanced with Topaz effects.
