The Royal Military Canal was built between 1804 and 1809 for strategic defence against invasion in the Napoleonic Wars between England and France (1793-1815). It runs for 28 miles (45km) from Seabrook (near Folkstone) to Cliff End (near Hastings) England. This shot shows The Royal Military Road, which was built parallel to the Canal. It was built with an earth parapet 13 feet (4 metres) high and "kinks" covered by field guns every 600 yards (549 metres), they together formed an impressive defensive structure. Impressions of Dungeness The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway was constructed during the 1920’s and opened on July 16th 1927. It was the dream of millionaire racing drivers Captain J.E.P. Howey and Count Louis Zborowski. The 15 in/381 mm gauge light railway is 13 ½ miles (22 km) long, running from Cinque Port in Hythe via Dymchurch, St Mary’s Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands to Dungeness. Dungeness is formed mostly of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. Cuspate forelands are also known as cuspate barriers or Nesses. They extend outwards from the shoreline in a triangular shape and in the case of Dungeness are stabilized by vegetation forming a unique eco system. Independence on the Pier? Number of views as of 21st May 2018 = 1150. As cruise ships leave Southampton docks heading for the English Channel, something of an optical illusion is created as they pass Hythe Pier. Hythe Pier was built in 1879 and is the 7th longest in the UK. A light railway links the pier head to a passenger ferry terminal at the far end of the pier.
