If you follow the river Feshie upstream into the Cairngorms, this was the last bridge you came to. Just beyond the river is braided, breaking into a myriad channels separated by banks of bleached shingle. Either side old Scots pines stood majestically in open grassland in what for me is a magical place. When I last saw the bridge it was rather wonky, and a sign read to cross at your own risk. On foot it seemed OK but I wouldn't have wanted to take a vehicle over. Anyway, the last I heard was that it got washed away when the river was in spate a couple of years later. I've painted this version in oil on a 20x8 inch board, using my photos for reference, adding a little more emphasis to the wonkiness!

Another view painted from my trips to Rye. This small (8x8 inch) oil painting is from the very top of Lion Street, with the last shop, right outside the church door. With the bulk of the church to the South its a shady passage, but you get interesting effects from the light that makes it there.

I thought it about time I painted a view of Portsmouth (Hampshire, UK), so I was delighted to find this unusual angle where the Spinnaker Tower looks like a little model sitting atop a chimney. The view is from the city walls, above the artist's shops of the arches. Painted in oil on a 12x10 inch board.

These strange tall huts are traditional fisherman's huts found only in Hastings. I don't think they use them anymore, but they have been preserved as distinctive historic buildings, and are very popular with photographers. There are quite a few of them, but few good angles for photographs as they are clustered tightly. For this painting I've used lamp black for the basic colour with a lot of white mixed in, but its not all black and white - there are plenty of other hues blended in : mauve, crimson, vandyke brown, sap green, naples yellow and cobalt blue

This is a painted view of Hereford cathedral, as seen along the narrow passge of Church street. I chose to paint this view as it gives a glimpse of the cathedral without making it the complete subject. Its all done in oils, working wet into wet on a 10x12 inch board.

I have painted The Maltings - a shopping area of Salisbury (UK) before, showing a cafe at one end. I spotted this view sitting on a bench, eating a sandwich and watching the world go by on the many paths that cross the area. What appealed to me was the pool of light either side of the gnarled willow trunk, framed beautifully by the foliage and the shade on the ground. Painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board.

The Salisbury art market takes place the first Sunday of the month during the summer months. I was there in July selling my wares and couldn't resist the opportunity to take some reference photos for another painting. And after a couple of weeks work her is the finished 12x24 inch oil painting...

This is a repaint of my old view of Ornsay lighthouse on the Isle Of Skye. You can find it along the channel that separates the island from the mainland (whose mountains you can see in the background). I've painted it over the original 12x10 inch painting - and at that size the brush marks will be quite apparent.

Another of my paintings of beautiful Tenby. This view comes from the little ferry that takes you across to Caldey Island. I chose this angle as it shows much of the town spread across its bluff, and its a view you rarely see published. Painted in oil on a 20x8 inch board

This is a view of Tenby that I've repainted over an original version I did in 2004. Why do that you may ask - well I felt I could do it a lot better now after so many years experience. I'm certainly happy with this version, and hope you enjoy it too. The view is from the path that leads to the museum, and its glimpsed through a gap, with the harbour just beneath. The painting is 14x18 inches.

On my travels I came to a florists unlike any I'd seen before. Outside was a wall of vegetation, and looking in the doorway it was a cave of vegetation hanging from every surface. Lit mainly from a second room beyond, it was a magical space and a challenge I just had to have a go at painting. I hope you like it as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to life. Its painted in oils on a 12x16 inch board.

This is the second of my oil paintings from the annual Santa rescue that takes place in Romsey, Hampshire. In this view I bring you the lit up facade of Bradbeers department store, with a refreshment stall in front. What interests me here is the play of light from the various sources along with the shadows cast.

Traveling through the Unknown

Bath abbey is quite a stunning building, but wait until just the right moment at dusk, and the floodlight and natural light balance to create this stunning effect, which I've painted in oil on a 12x16 inch board.

There is nothing more uplifting in Spring than the sight of a carpet of bluebells spread through a wood. There is really something quite magical, but you really have to be there to feel it, as its very much a surround and overwhelm your sense type of experience. So its with trepidation that I've attempted to capture something of it in this painting, for those unable to get to an English bluebell wood. Its based on photos I took, and the feeling I had in my local wood in Spring 2022. At the time of writing its just a few weeks too early for this year's display.
