Sherborne Posters and Art Prints

I went to Sherborne (Dorset, UK) in search of a view to paint or draw. The place has plenty of lovely old buildings, but somehow no matter where I positioned myself they never made a pleasing composition. In a last attempt for a view I found a slope to the South of the town, and found I got a semi-aerial view. Its the sort of thing that works well in pen and ink, but is very awkward to execute as its almost impossible to keep track of where you are flitting between drawing and source. It also required a lot of pencil work first to make sure the buildings all joined up (more or less) before committing to the permanence of ink. Sherborne School Coat of Arms Number of views as of 9th June 2019 = 700. The Coat of Arms above the entrance to Sherborne School (Sherborne, Dorset, England). The Coat of Arms includes the mottos of the British monarch, 'Dieu et mon droit' (God and my right) and the Order of the Garter, 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (Shamed be he who thinks ill of it). Sherborne is an independent boys school, originally founded by St Aldhelm in the 8th century. Notable old-boys include Alan Turing, Cecil Day-Lewis, Jon Pertwee, John Le Mesurier and Chris Martin. Sherborne Castle Sherborne Castle (Sherborne, Dorset, England) is a tudor mansion, built in 1594 by Sir Walter Raleigh. It has been the ancestral home of the Digby family since 1617. The gardens, grounds and lake are the work of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown and date from 1753. Not that the good people of Sherborne are greedy or anything, but the 12th century ruins of Sherborne Old Castle adjoin the grounds of the new castle. Date: 4th September 2016.

It is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist and was built between 1440 and 1445 and extended and restored in 1864.

The Orangery, Sherborne Castle Gardens The orangery at Sherborne Castle (Dorset, England) was built in the late 1770s, in a classical style, probably to the designs of Henry Holland, an associate of Capability Brown. Date: 4th September 2016.

Angel House, Sherborne Number of views as of 24th January 2017 = 490. The sign over the Tuscan porch entrance to this town house in Sherborne (Dorset, England) reads 'Licensed To Let Post Horses', a clue to the building's former use as a coaching inn. In days gone by, a post horse was kept for the use of persons carrying the post or for hire by travellers. Date: 28th September 2014.

*Digby Memorial, Sherborne' Number of views as of 4th March 2018 = 400. The Digby Memorial, situated outside Sherborne Abbey (Dorset, England) commemorates the life and works of George Digby who funded much renovation work to the Abbey during the 19th century. The memorial was built in 1884 and features statues of: * St Aldhelm (Bishop of Sherborne in the 7th century), * Bishop Roger of Salisbury (Roger de Caen, Abbot of Sherborne who constructed Sherborne Old Castle in the 12th century), * Abbot Bradford (rector of Sherborne Abbey in the 15th century) and * Sir Walter Raleigh (right of shot, who lived at Sherborne Castle in the 16th century). Overshadowed by the abbey nearby, this church at Sherborne still has it's own beauty.

The Old Castle in Sherborne (Dorset, UK) is a romantic 12th century ruin next to New Sherborne Castle. After withstanding two sieges during the Civil War, only the Southwest Gatehouse and parts of the castle, including the Great Tower and the North Range, now survive. Loved by Sir Walter Raleigh, he leased the castle but when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London for marrying one of Queen Elizabeth I's maids of honour without her permission, it was then leased out but remained a favourite home of the famous explorer.

Morgan Number of views as of 28th September 2016 = 650. Another superbly turned-out Morgan to add to my collection (I wish)! If you can't have British Racing Green, then this full-bodied, claret paint job comes a close second. The Morgan Motor Company is the last remaining, family-owned, independent, British motor car manufacturer. They build about 100 cars a month, each one subject to exacting standards of design, craftsmanship and performance. Date: 28th September 2014. Location: Sherborne, Dorset, England.
