On a walking track in the Tarra-Bulga National Park in March 2009 I came across this fern frond unfurling while being watched & supported by the background of ferns. Sacred Datura Bud Unfurling by Debra Martz Beautiful but poisonous and may be fatal if ingested by humans, livestock, or pets. It was growing wild throughout Zion National Park. Datura wrighti is sacred to some Native Americans and has a history of having been used in ceremonies and rites of passage by Chumash, Tongva, and others....however, not all survived the rites of passage.

I wanted to capture the motion of a beautiful rose opening before my eyes. This is what I call a photographic painting. I use my computer to make a painterly version of my image then I blend some of the original photograph back into the image. I combine reality and fantasy into one image.

I wanted to illustrate a red rose unfurling or opening. This unusual image started as a straight photograph and I did my magic to it. It is part straight photography blended with a more painterly version of the image. It is part reality and part fantasy.

Simplicity in Nature by Debra Martz It was early autumn and most all plants were turning yellows and reds heading for dormant season but this small wild plant was just beginning! I spotted it while walking around Trout Lake located about 10 or so miles up the mountains on a forest road in New Mexico.

Just thought this fern quite remarkable in situ whilst out on a walk up the Watkin path... The light was too strong and distinct on the way up but on our return the light was more subtle and diffuse yet illuminated the greenery well to pruduce this dramatic effect...
