Description: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope designed to conduct infrared astronomy. Its high-resolution and high-sensitivity instruments allow it to view objects too old, distant, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This enables investigations across many fields of astronomy and cosmology, such as observation of the first stars and the formation of the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets.

Description: JWST, or the James Webb Space Telescope, will observe the universe in near-infrared light to study the first stars and galaxies that formed after the Big Bang, the evolution of galaxies, stars and planetary systems, and the origins of life. It is planned to be launched on December 22 2021 Infrared photo credit: NASA
Description: An image of the Cartwheel Galaxy and its companion galaxies is a composite taken from the James Webb’s Near-Infrared and Mid-Infrared Instrument on the powerful telescope. This cartwheel galaxy formed as the result of a high-speed collision that occurred about 400 million years ago. The Cartwheel is composed of two rings, a bright inner ring and a colorful outer ring. Both rings expand outward from the center of the collision like shock waves.
