I walked alone through Hull, the city on the edge of my childhood world. As years pass, the cityscape changes, ebbs, decays and regrows. Yet Hull always takes me back in time and place to the earliest years of my life. I love to explore, to reaffirm and to day dream. An earliest memory is of seeing derelict buildings that seemed to be returning to nature, with tree branches growing through roofs and windows. I saw this now empty pub, shuttered and probably lost, and decided to paint it. I used collage, thick paint and vivid colour, and I wanted to capture the bright light and vivid hues. The work is an ideal and unique souvenir of Hull, a perfect gift too.

I was too young to remember pubs, having left the city before adulthood. I rediscovered them in later years, with the city’s cobbled High Street being especially wonderful. Filled with dark, cosy atmosphere, candlelight and rafters, the lingering smell of stale ale soaked into wooden floors. A place of magical romance and escape. I often imagine Victorian Hull here, swirling mist and the ghostly sound of foghorns, rattling carriages and the clopping of hooves. This work depicts a favourite historical pub on the High Street and makes a perfect gift and a great addition to any collection.

Stop for a pint, but be mindful of the locals having a row.

A famous and iconic Hull pub, filled with atmosphere, a place of ghosts and friendship. A lovely work that exudes Hull. An ideal gift, a wonderful souvenir. I have painted this scene before, but the pub, and what it stands for and what it reminds me of, continue to draw me.

This fun St Patricks Day design is for all those that are looking forward to freedom on 17th March. If you are Irish and have been vaccinated then this is the just for you.

A cheeky dog appears to be leaning in anticipation of something, a pint of beer perhaps, or more likely a meaty morsel. There is an energy to him, a cheekiness too. The work is playful and a contrast of colour is used to add energy. A wonderful gift for any dog lover, and a great addition to any collection of animal-themed art.

Here we're standing outside the King William IV public house which lies at the dead end of the lane which largely comprises the hamlet of Hailey. The building itself is C17th and is Grade II listed. Driving out the city, along long, flat roads, I come to a huge pub, reminiscent perhaps of an Elizabethan manor, solid and imposing, English through and through. I have a pang of longing, for times long ago, for the smell of pub food and the tang of yeast and beer. The work is rich in detail, both simple and intricate. The pub sits under a wide East Yorkshire sky, with the promise of the flat plains and wolds beyond. A great addition to any collection of English art, a fantastic souvenir of Hull.

Looking across the staggered crossroads just outside Aldworth in West Berkshire to the Four Points Inn. It's a thatched building dating from the C17th having apparently been a pub for over 350 years! The village sits on the Berkshire (or North Wessex) Downs above Streatley and the Thames Valley in the midst of farmland. Just further up the road from here is the church which contains the huge effigies of knights belonging to the De La Beche Family. The image is finished as a pastel drawing.

Walking east, across the river Hull, I enjoy the stillness of Sunday morning. The pavement already feels warm, a scent of tarmac and the brine of the Humber. Unfamiliar now, memories of childhood stirred as I remember the direction of the road. I pause outside a pub, and I decide I want to paint it, enjoying its solidity and nostalgia. There is a red lion over the door, red bricks and chalk boards, an invitation to enter and enjoy a cheerful evening. The work is full of colour, a perfect souvenir of Hull, a great gift.

Devils Tower is a national monument in Wyoming where rock climbing and the great outdoors can be enjoyed! A laccolithic sculpture in public lands and the national park of the northern plains Indians or indigenous people.

Edinburgh, Pub on the Corner

At the end of the lane in Ipsden Hailey, South Oxfordshire, stands the King William IV pub. The building dates from the C17th and is a Grade II listed historic building. Hailey is a small hamlet on the edge of the Chiltern Hills overlooking the Thames Valley. From here you can see as far as Didcot and Wallingford - the local town. Not many cars rushing by here as this is as far as you can drive. After this it's walking or cycling only! The image has a coloured pencil finish.

A walk across the river Hull took me to a road called Strawberry Street, a place of industry and urban landscapes, a place that was quiet, at this time of day even desolate. I remembered times long gone, half a century ago when this was the area where my father worked, in a factory surrounded by walls and wire, red brick and the scent of tar. Seagulls woop. Trucks rumble by in the distance, fresh from the ferry port. And I stop to admire the pub, closed now, its net curtains hiding the interior. It reminds me of Victorian times, of foggy nights and the ghostly sound of piano music perhaps. But maybe Strawberry Street is playing tricks on me. This work makes an ideal souvenir of Hull, a great gift, or a perfect collection starter.

A digital drawing of the village of Tidmarsh in West Berkshire. Standing on the crossroas here is the Greyhound pub, a C13th half timbered and thatched building. Ahead is The Street, the main road through the village , now the A340 but once, apparently the Roman road which joined Silchester (Calleve Atrebatum) in Hampshire with Dorchester-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Along this road is a row of old cottages, the Georgian village pump, the round toll house and the old school.

Places of Proustian memory, places that evoke. This corner of Edinburgh reminds me of times long gone, of early family visits, relatives and days of hot summer freedom, when pavements smelled of tar and toy shops and Scottish sweet shops beckoned and seduced, followed by buttery scones and fizzy orange. And at the heart stands a pub, scents of ale, and the occasional roar of crowds, its colours purple and gold. I wanted to repaint this scene. A lovely gift, a great addition to any collection.

Albion House Tavern, St Peter Port Number of views as of 26th February 2018 = 1380. Dating from 1780, this tavern is one of the buildings that overlook St Peter Port harbour in the Channel Island of Guernsey. I haven't checked, but apparently Albion House is in the Guinness Book of Records because it is the closest pub to a church in Britain. Date: 22nd August 2014.
