As the second incarnation of the American Soccer League was crumbling,[1] five of the eight ASL teams (Carolina Lightnin', renamed the Charlotte Gold, Dallas Americans, Jacksonville Tea Men, Oklahoma City Slickers, renamed Stampede, and Rochester Flash) left to founded the USL.
Description: The San Diego Sockers were a soccer and indoor soccer team based in San Diego, California. The team played in the indoor and outdoor editions of the North American Soccer League (NASL) until 1984 as well as the original Major Indoor Soccer League and CISL. The franchise folded in 1996 and was the last surviving NASL franchise. The Sockers are considered the most successful indoor soccer team. They made the playoffs in all but one of their 16 seasons of playing indoors.

Description: The Charlotte area has historically been home to several lower-division soccer teams, dating back to the Carolina Lightnin' in the early 1980s. The Lightnin' won the American Soccer League championship in 1981. After the league folded in 1983, the team played for one season as the Charlotte Gold in United Soccer League before ceasing operations.
Description: The Canton Invaders was an indoor soccer club based in Canton, Ohio that competed in the American Indoor Soccer Association and the National Professional Soccer League. The Invaders and the AISA began play in 1984 with six teams (Chicago Vultures, Canton Invaders, Columbus Capitals, Kalamazoo Kangaroos, Louisville Thunder, and Milwaukee Wave). After the 1995–96 season, the team relocated and became the Columbus Invaders.
