This is an image of The Sanctuary of Christ the King (Santuário de Cristo Rei), a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon. It is located on top of an isolated hill in the Almada district about 135 m above the sea and overlooking the Tagus River left bank. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The project was inaugurated in May 1959. The giant cement statue was erected to express gratitude because the Portuguese were spared the effects of World War II.
