Description: This design is based on an old Clipper Gasoline porcelain sign which features their signature yellow, green, and orange color combination along with their telltale Boeing 314 Clipper long-range flying boat above sunset lit ocean waves. Clipper apparently produced both automobile and aviation fuel during their time and are a rather rare brand to come across in the antique circles according to those who hunt down vintage gasoline and service station signs and memorabilia.
Description: During September 1919, Harry Sinclair restructured Sinclair Oil and Refining Corporation, Sinclair Gulf Corporation, and 26 other related entities into Sinclair Consolidated Oil Corporation. In 1932, this new entity was renamed Consolidated Oil Corporation. In 1943, it was renamed Sinclair Oil Corporation. Near the beginning of the Great Depression, Sinclair sold the remaining interest in its pipeline subsidiary to Standard Oil Company (Indiana) for US$72.5 million (Standard Oil had purchased a 50% interest in the pipeline subsidiary in 1921). With these funds, including an additional US$33.5 million from an additional common stock issue, Sinclair retired several promissory notes and prepared to weather the Depression.
Description: A. L. Confer was a railroad station agent who set up a primitive oil refining "still" in his hometown of Reno, Pennsylvania. By carefully controlling temperatures in the heating and cooling process, Confer formulated a better quality of illuminating oil (later known as kerosene) for use in oil lamps. Only a small portion of crude oil was used in making kerosene, so Confer experimented on the formerly wasted oil by-products and produced steam engine lubrication. In 1885 he formed The Empire Oil & Grease Company, and grew the company with oil refineries in Reno, and offices in Oil City, Pennsylvania. Special blends of motor oil were manufactured for automobiles, outboard boat engines, and airplanes, and sold under the Wolf's Head brand.
