Description: Sugar Skull Girl - La Calavera Catrina for the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead or Día de Muertos. Acrylics on cardboard primed with gesso, orginal size A4. 2016. Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico. Family and friends gather together to remember their dead loved ones and help support their spiritual journey. It's celebrated at the end of October or beginning of November. One way to honor the deceased is through sugar skulls and other gifts and visiting the graves. La Calavera Catrina (Elegent Skull) is a representation of a skeleton dressed in an upper class outfit and has become the icon of Day of the Dead. José Guadalupe Posada's original La Calavera Catrina was a satire of indigenous upper class Mexican people.
Description: The “Catrina” skull (a.k.a. “Dapper Skeleton” or “Elegant Skull”) it’s a popular culture icon born in Mexico, in the zinc etching by the famous artist José Guadalupe Posada. Given it ties to the past heritage of the Aztecs and the mexican “Holy Death” deity, the Catrina has become the icon of Death in Mexico (specially in the All Saints’ Day) and now is also popular in other countries (like Spain or USA where is a halloween icon). This is my interpretation of a Catrina. Model and inspiration comes from my best friend “Miss. K".
