Description: In 1956, American Civil Defense efforts focused on preparing the civilian population for potential nuclear attack during the Cold War, with a mix of public education, drills, and the development of warning systems. A key aspect was the "Operation Alert" exercise, a nationwide drill simulating an attack, and the "Duck and Cover" campaign aimed at educating the public on safety measures.
