White Zombie Freak Show 1995 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: Released on April 11, 1995, Astro-Creep: 2000 is the fourth and final studio album by American heavy metal band White Zombie. The album featured a more industrial sound and proved to be the band's most commercially successful record, peaking at number six with the aid of the hit singles "More Human than Human" and "Super-Charger Heaven." To support the record, the band toured non-stop for fifteen months, playing over 200 shows with a variety of acts that crisis-crossed America multiple times. In the summer of '96, White Zombie played its final dates before breaking up in September '98. The tour brought a freak show vibe, including this creepy hook-handed clown who is now back from the dead to freak out coulrophobia sufferers everywhere.

Clown Alley San Francisco 1962 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: In 1962, Enrico Banducci drove past an unusual looking shuttered gas station at Columbus and Jackson in San Francisco. His friend Morgan Montague remarked, “what a great hamburger stand that would make.” A few months later, Montague and Banducci opened a 24-hour hamburger stand at the same spot, calling it Clown Alley. The triangular café, on the edge of San Francisco's North Beach’s bar scene, became a wildly popular late-night hangout as people leaving the bars craved a greasy burger. With the success of Clown Alley, the duo opened a second location at Lombard and Divisadero, but soon their partnership dissolved, with each of them taking a location, and now there were two burger stands called Clown Alley less than two miles apart.

Vintage Clown Portrait - Dark Carnival Surrealist Poster Socks
Main Tag:

Description: "We're all mad here," said the Cheshire Cat, but this cone-hatted clown wears madness like Sunday clothes. Unlike his red-hatted cousin, this one's got the direct stare of someone who's counted every laugh and found them wanting. The cone hat points to heaven while the eyes stay earthbound - classic surrealist contradiction. Theater kids get it immediately, vintage carnival collectors know this is the real deal, and anyone who understands that comedy is tragedy plus time will want this watching over their workspace. It's anti-mainstream circus art for people who prefer their entertainment with existential weight.

Lite Clown 1967 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: Coulrophobia is a fear (phobia) of clowns. Children and adults who fear clowns may experience extreme, irrational reactions when they see one in person or view pictures or videos of clowns. Lite Clown, however, is a familiar face to those who were children in the late '60s and '70s, and we've never heard of anyone freaking out or otherwise being afraid of this smiling clown, even in a dark room where he glowed brightly.

Roscoe's Madness (V2) Socks
Main Tag:

Description: About a year ago, I had a dream about a fascinating character design concept: A robotic clown with vibrant LED eyes, a floating shapeshifting head and hands, and a playful desire to scare and entertain. I named him Roscoe, and one of these days I intend to write a story akin to the Are You Afraid of the Dark reboot, focusing on his escapades as he travels from circus to circus, feeding on fear, laughter and adrenaline. He SEEMS unhinged, and totally batty, but it's all just part of the act. ...Or is it?

Jokers Wild 1863 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: Samuel Hart is credited with printing the first illustrated "Best Bower" card in 1863 with his "Imperial Bower". Best Bower-type Jokers continued to be produced well into the 20th century. Cards labelled "Joker" began appearing around the late 1860s, with some depicting clowns and jesters. It is believed that the term "Joker" comes from Jucker or Juckerspiel, the original German spelling of Euchre. One British manufacturer, Charles Goodall, was manufacturing packs with Jokers for the American market in 1871. The first Joker for the domestic British market was sold in 1874. Italians call Jokers "Jolly", for many early cards were labelled "Jolly Joker."

Clowning For Christ 1982 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: There is no shortage of ways for Christians to share their faith through ministry, but one of the more unique ones that took off in the early '80s involves clowns. Commonly known as Clowning for Christ, these face painted Christians chose to share the word of God with squeaky noses and squirting flowers. So whether you have a fear of clowns or a fear of God, this '80s design from the Clowning for Christ movement is a perfect fit!
