Description: Japanese Horror - The Ghost of the Well (Banchō Sarayashiki) is one of Japan's most famous ghost stories (onryō). Okiku was a servant accused of losing a valuable heirloom plate by a samurai whose romantic advances she rejected. Distraught, she threw herself into a well; her ghost famously rises at night to count plates from one to nine before wailing. This legend heavily inspired modern J-horror tropes, including the iconic imagery in The Ring.
