Moorhen Socks
Description: Black and white animal illustration of a baby moorhen chick. Drawn using one of my own photographs as reference, this drawing was created by hand using fine ink marker pens on Bristol board. Common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), also known as waterhen or swamp chicken are a widespread species of waterfowl found in many parts of the world. Moorhen are a common sight at parks and lakes in England but it's quite rare that I get to see a chick out of water like this one, it's always a surprise to see those feet! Moorhen are very distinctive looking birds, displaying black and brown plumage with a few areas of white. Their bills are a striking red with yellow tips and yellow legs. Chicks are very fluffy and almost black all over.
Description: "Common Gallinule Walking on Vegetation" I spotted this Common Gallinule while birdwatching from a boardwalk near South Padre Island's Convention Center. Its bright red face shield always reminds me of candy corn, but another distinctive feature is its yellow legs and remarkably long toes, perfectly adapted for walking across marsh vegetation.
