It lives in clear vegetated lakes, quiet pools and backwaters of creeks and small to large rivers and is usually solitary and highly territorial. It feeds mainly on fishes, but at times feeds heavily on frogs and crayfish, also cannibalism is common. It can reach a maximum length of 137 cm (54 inches).
