North Wilkesboro Speedway 1947 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval racetrack located on Route 421, 80 miles north of Charlotte. The speedway opened its doors on May 18, 1947, as a dirt track with the first official event promoted as a modified race, including heat races and a feature event. While an attendance of about 3,000 people was expected, a crowd in excess of 10,000 showed up to see one of the famous Flock brothers compete (and ultimately win the race). The track is just 5/8 of a mile around and features a unique uphill backstretch and downhill frontstretch that played into it's reputation as one of the fastest short-tracks of the '40s and '50s. The original dirt oval was paved in 1957 and continued to operate until the track's closure in 1996.

Short Trackin' 1976 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: Short track racing is where stock car racing got its start after leaving the back road events behind in favor of organized and regulated competition. Unlike the larger tracks, short-track events offer fans and competitors close racing, where the bodies of the cars actually rub against one another on oval tracks of less than one mile in length. Known as the 'minor leagues' of racing, this is where aspiring drivers, mechanics, and tuners can get into racing on a budget, and have a ton of fun doing it. Most professional drivers gets started short trackin' before making their way from these rural bullrings to the superspeedways.

Bunnell Motor Company 1944 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: The Bunnell Motor Company was founded in the '30s in Bunnell, Florida as an engine repair and rebuild shop. W. H. Atkinson II purchased the business in 1943, keeping things business as usual for a while, but his interest in stock car racing saw Bunnell Motor Company begin offering some high performance engines as a way to be a part of the stock car racing scene. By the early '50s, his son W. H. Atkinson III was getting into racing, and of course, it was one of dad's engines that powered his race car. By the late '50s, Bunnell Motor Company was focused almost entirely on stock car and drag racing engines, and after his dad died in 1962, Atkinson III had Bunnell Motor Company exclusively building high performance engines.

STP Racer's Choice 1954 Socks

Description: What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.

Daytona Beach Automobile Races 1936 Socks
Main Tag:

Description: In the early 20th century, drivers came to prove their prowess in Daytona Beach and several land speed records were set in the process. This eventually led to some loosely organized races, though the first “official” race on Daytona Beach took place in 1936. The track ran due south for two miles on A1A, which runs parallel to the ocean. Drivers then accessed the beach at the South Turn, went two miles on the hard-packed beach surface, and turned away from the beach at the North Turn (now the location of a great restaurant). It sounds crazy to hold stock car racing events on the beach nowadays, but for about two decades, it was THE place to race if you were an up-and-coming racer wanting to rub wheels with the big boys.
