Description: During the early 1880s, William Thum, a druggist in a Grand Rapids, Michigan, tasked his four sons with developing a better flypaper. The brothers developed a sticky formula based on castor oil, resins, and wax, that resulted in a much longer shelf life, and didn't saturate the backing. The Thum's launched a new company called Tanglefoot Flypaper to market their new and improved solution to a major nuisance in an era when horse drawn carriages were the norm. While several other companies produced flypaper, none were as well-known or popular as Tanglefoot, whose formula was patented in 1887, and was well known to consumers as the better mouse, er, fly trap.
