Description: Patrons were incredibly loyal to The Broken Drum on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica and were shaken when the restaurant closed in 1986, according to local newspaper reports we've seen. The hamburger joint was a long-standing institution and is even now remembered fondly by former customers. With its open fire and wood-burning ovens and fresh flowers on every table, the restaurant served food until 4am and many aspiring actors and actresses used it as a place to meet and fret about their careers. The menu cover, showing a clown beating a broken drum, with the words "you can't beat it," is thought to be from the 1940s.
Description: The Hollywood Canteen operated at 1451 Cahuenga Boulevard in the Los Angeles, California, neighborhood of Hollywood between October 3, 1942, and November 22, 1945 (Thanksgiving Day), as a club offering food, dancing and entertainment for servicemen, usually on their way overseas. Even though the majority of visitors were US servicemen, the canteen was open to servicemen of allied countries as well as women in all branches of service. A serviceman's ticket for admission was his uniform and everything at the canteen was free of charge.
Description: ShowBiz Pizza Place was a popular 1980s American family entertainment chain combining pizza, arcade games, and animatronic shows. Founded March 3, 1980, in Kansas City, Missouri, it later merged with Chuck E. Cheese after 1984 bankruptcy proceedings. Rebranding began in 1990, and the ShowBiz name was retired in January 1993.
Description: Wolfie's was a popular chain of Jewish delis in Miami Beach, Florida, known for its delicious sandwiches, platters, and pastries located at the intersection of 172nd Street and Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. It opened in May 1954 and closed on March 30, 2008. Sporting a large neon sign in the front, the building was designed in the 1950s Miami Modern style.
Description: After spending the last 25 years entombed beneath a dull drop ceiling and the beigest of beige drywall, Santa Monica’s vintage 1959 Penguin coffee shop is being restored to its Googie glory. The jaunty-roofed dining room was designed by architects Armet & Davis (you know their work from Norms, Pann’s, and Johnie’s on Wilshire) and served up burgers and malts for generations before the building became a dentist’s office in 1991.
