Their stated mission was 'to allow crafty, smart women the ability to speak their minds and network with other crafty, smart women." This was a time when women were expected to be sweet and subservient, but were starting to stand up to the rampant inequality and limitations imposed on them. These 'radical' women took to discussing the issues in groups that they already belonged to, such as book clubs and sewing circles. Since it seemed such a radical departure from expected behavior, the name 'Ladies' Sewing Circle and Terrorist Society' was chosen as it was both ironic and humorous.
