Pileated refers to the birds prominent red crest, from the Latin pileatus meaning ‘capped”. It is believed the cartoon image of “woody woodpecker” was based on the appearance of a pileated woodpecker. The bird's long, pointed beak and sharp claws are prominently detailed
Description: This is my acrylic painting of an acorn woodpecker with red crest is in the process of storing acorns in a tree for winter. They store acorns in small holes drilled especially for this purpose in “granaries” or “storage trees”. The granaries can consist of thousands of holes, each of which may be filled by an acorn in the autumn. They also eat insects, sap and fruit. They have a call that sounds almost like they are laughing. This bird painting is included in the bird playing card game called “Chirp Up”.
