Saint Francis Xavier, Priest, Patron of Foreign Missionaries and Plague Epidemics, from a photographic image I took of a stained glass window in Southeastern Florida.

While in Melbourne recently, I was fortunate to meet an amazing man who inspired this painting. His name is Zaugustaz, and if you are a regular to the city you may even know him. He is a very colourful character and dresses accordingly. Zaugustaz is a beautiful person who loves you to stop and chat. He has a small suitcase with him, containing his paraphernalia of the day.... his art books, his memorabilia and his paintings, which he will proudly show to you. His main home is on the streets and he has been living this way for 50 years. When I met him I immediately thought of St Francis.

Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic saint, was a mystic Italian Catholic friar, founder of the Franciscans, and one of the most venerated figures in Christianity. In 1223, he arranged for the first Christmas nativity scene. Canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. Patron saint of animals and natural environment. It is customary for churches to hold the blessing of animals on his feast day of 4 October. He founded the Order of Friars Minor, Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is known for his devotion to the Eucharist, he received the stigmata during the religious apparition of a Seraphic angel. Along with Catherine of Siena, he was designated patron saint of Italy.

The San Damiano Cross is the large Romanesque rood cross before which St. Francis of Assisi was praying when he is said to have received the commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church.
