1960s Radio Stickers

Photo of the inside of a vintage 1960s solid state radio showing all the electronic components. I kept this radio since my childhood thinking it would become a classic keepsake. I recently opened it up and took this picture of its circuits. Photo Copyright Glenn Stok

C-FUN was a legendary Top 40 station for Vancouver in the 60's and 70's and this design celebrates their earliest logo design from the days when AM radio was more than just sports and talk.

On November 8, 1968, classic music station 98.5 FM KXRQ emerged from months of silence as KZAP after being purchased by Lee Gahagan. The new free form radio station quickly found its groove and had an immediate impression on the large college crowd in Sacramento. Playing an eclectic mix of rock 'n roll music, KZAP was a very much a college radio station that appealed to a youth audience that had never really bought into the other commercial stations. The station remained extremely progressive, and was the first station in the United States to air a commercial for condoms and was an early adopter of Stereo Quadraphonic sound technology. When Gahagan unexpectedly died in 1972, KZAP settled into an album-oriented rock format.

This is a photo of a vintage 1960s Courier 1M Citizens Band Radio with its microphone shown in front of the speaker grill. I used it to talk with friends in the late 1960s, when it was popular, and kept it for nostalgia as memorabilia.

In 1968, a young comedian by the name of Bill Cosby began his long career with a syndicated radio series called “The Bill Cosby Radio Program.” Over 350 of the daily 5-minute comedy inserts were produced by Frank Buxton (who also doubled as the announcer and Bill’s “straight man”) and syndicated to over 200 teen-oriented (top 40) radio stations all over America on LP record. Bill and Frank improvised each episode, with sound effects provided by Jack Benny’s sound man, Gene Twombly. Recordings of the Bill Cosby Radio Program are extremely hard to find, as the LPs were likely considered by radio stations to be disposable. This design features the show’s very ’60s style logo that includes hand lettered type and a hip old school radio.

Remebering WIXY 1260 Radio Station in Cleveland, Ohio. Although WIXY 1260 AM was around for only 10 1/2 years, it played terrific music and had greatl disc jockeys. It also sponsored some wonderful concerts including bringing the Beatles to Cleveland. And we loved going to the record store every week and picking up the WIXY Top 60 Survey of all the latest songs.

A design inspired by a linocut illustration by British artist Victor Reinganum which appeared in a 1968 issue of The Radio Times magazine.
