A street in Laujar. I always find interesting scenes to paint when I visit Laujar de Andarax. This lovely town in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Andalucia, spain is only 30 minutes drive from my home. This is a watercolour of a typical street scene with pots of flowers on the balconies and by the doors of the old houses.

Looking from the Mirador San Nicolás in the Albaicin towards the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada must be one of the most popular scenes in Granada. I painted this watercolour in the spring when the colours are vibrant and the peaks of the Sierra Nevada covered in snow. May is a beautiful month in Granada. The heavy rain in April fell as snow on the Sierra Nevada. From the Albaicin, the sierras provide a perfect backdrop for the views towards the Alhambra. The Plaza Nueva below the Alhambra in old Granada. Around the square are some beautiful old buildings including the lovely church of Santa Ana. On the right the wooded hillside leads up to the Alhambra Palace. A special place to paint in watercolour. Looking over the treetops to the magnificent fortress and palace of the Alhambra. High above the city of Granada, it commands views of the Andalucian countryside of southern Spain. Building by the Moorish rulers began in 1238 on a rocky outcrop of the Sierra Nevada. Later it was to become the home of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and their daughter Katherine of Aragon - soon to be the wife of Arthur Tudor and then King Henry VIII following Arthur's death. I started this painting of the women of Terque over a month ago. They were dressed in traditional costume at the village lavadero during the annual day of celebrating the old way of life in La Alpujarra. After a fall last month, when I badly bruised my right side, I was unable to work on it again until last week. At last I can show you the finished watercolour. This narrow street of shops in the old Moorish quarter of Granada, the Albaicin, provides a very colourful subject for a watercolour. The window of Restaurante La Buganvilla, Las Negras. On my recent visit to the pretty, seaside village of Las Negras in the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata, Almeria, Southern Spain, I was expecting to paint the usual scenes of the boats on the beach with the black cliffs of Cerro Negro behind. I lived in Las Negras for several years and painted these scenes many times so I looked for something different. As you know I mainly paint in watercolours but also use soft pastels, particularly for portrait and figurative work. I decided I would like a change but I find acrylics too artificial and oil painting too physically demanding so I thought I would try egg tempera paints. This very old medium was used by the Renaissance painters before the advent of oil paint and in more recent times by the artist, Andrew Wyeth. For my first painting in this medium I chose a simple subject, this shady corner in Benecid, Almeria, Spain, with tones and textures rather than light and shadow.

I love painting scenes along this narrow, cobbled lane beside the Rio Darro in the Albaicin in old Granada. The magnificent buildings, the colours, the light and shade make perfect subjects for watercolours. These dancers were performing at the Jornada de la Recuperación de Oficios Antiguas in our next village, Terque, in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Andalucia, Spain last month. I enjoyed using my watercolour pigments for this painting but I had to be cautious using strong pigments such as cadmium. I also had to strike a balance between isolating the dancers and making the background too busy. The especially primed canvas was ideal for painting on. Blue chair in the shade. To set up another composition for a lockdown watercolour at my home I placed this old chair under the nectarine tree in my finca in Andalucia. I liked the contrast of the light and shade. The hens, always appreciative of human company, came to see what I was doing and posed obligingly. I thought these squashes from my finca would make an interesting subject for a watercolour. I placed them with dried grass on a shelf in my greenhouse but I thought the composition needed something else so I went back out into my finca and picked the thistles which I put in a small, metal bucket. I think the colours and textures work well together in this still life. The garden of the Mosque in Granada is a peaceful oasis in the Albaicin where you can escape the crowds of tourists that gather nearby in the Mirador de San Nicolas. I last painted this scene six years ago. The gardens have since matured so this, my latest painting, is quite different but the view of the Alhambra from here never changes.
