For the truest, deepest, and fervent skateboarder, there are destinations that offer sublime skateboarders' experiences... and that includes California! For skateboarding enthusiasts who either live in, have visited, or want to live in or get themselves to California.

Throughout the '70s, competitive skateboarding continued to gain popularity which led to purpose-built skateparks being constructed across America and it should come as no surprise that California played host to the majority of them. Buena Park’s Skatopia was one such example and an upscale one at that. This full service (and fully landscaped) facility was a $500,000 skatepark when it opened in 1977 and without question raised the bar for skateparks and the sport. The facility welcomed countless kids and adults alike who ripped it up on their concrete bowls every day of the week and was the site of numerous championships and competitions over the years.

Located near Santa Monica and Venice Beach, the infamous Marina del Rey Skatepark couldn’t have been in a better location as skateboarding was hitting its fever pitch and pool skating was all the rage. The initial park consisted of three pools, a 10’ half pipe, two intermediate bowls, a beginner bowl, a 230 yard slalom, and a large freestyle area with gentle banks. Unlike most parks at the time, the common areas between runs were finished, so you could literally skate the entire park, not unlike skating around in the 720°arcade game. During it’s relatively short life between 1978 and 1981, Marina del Rey Skatepark played host to countless locals and visitors alike, as well as big name, big money skate and BMX competitions.

California Classic Skateboards opened their doors in San Diego's Mission Beach neighborhood in 1987 and despite being in the midst of skateboarding's second coming, they didn't make the same kind of factory stamped modern boards everyone else was making. Instead, they chose to focus on hand-building old school penny boards, longboards, and cruisers that celebrated California's sidewalk surfing heritage.   

Founded in 1970, California Free Former was the world's largest manufacturer of skateboards during the skateboard craze of the '70s. The Torrance, California-based company ceased operations in 1981 as skateboarding's second wave was just picking up and today, California Free Former boards are highly sought after collectibles as given the very rough and tumble nature of their usage, very few survived.

Del Mar Skateboard Ranch, also known as DMSR, was an American skatepark in Del Mar, California, which opened in August of 1978 and was demolished July 1987. The park was built in '78 and quickly became the gathering point for skaters throughout the San Diego County area, including many influential skaters that would go on to be well-known pros. The park featured a bunch of terrain options that included the keyhole pool, kidney “Kona” pool, egg bowl thirteen footer, square pool, halfpipe, big reservoir, baby snake run, giant banked slalom, and the freestyle reservoir. Additional amenities included an arcade, pro shop, mini-golf, and several hi-ball trampoline setups.

This sick skater in black KZK101 design is all about that kickflip and air.

RIP - 1978-1981 Big "O" housed one of the most famous pools in skateboarding history -- the capsule -- that saw skateboarding airs first hit the 6' barrier by Dave Andrecht in one of the gnarliest skate contests ever seen ('80 Hester Series). It also included a clover pool and small keyhole along with an array of great snake runs and small bowls. Coming out of nowhere were two identical 3/4 pipes that laid right next to each other. Big "O" locals included "Master of Disaster" Duane Peters, Carabeth Burnside, Ray "Bones" Rodriguez and Bob Serafin.

Whirlin' Wheels Skateboard Park was located in Escondido, California at Felicita and Centre City Parkway during the height of the '70s skateboarding craze. Compared to other parks of the era, Whirlin' Wheels was pretty basic in its offerings and as such, didn't stick around nearly as long as some larger parks with more skating terrain and diverse entertainment options did.
