Canaletto's paintings were characterized by their vibrant colors, precise draughtsmanship, and a sense of depth and perspective. Looking over the waters of the Venetian Lagoon to the Campanile (bell tower) in St Mark's Square, Venice. It is late afternoon and the skies are stormy, allowing the late sunlight to illuminate the tower. The Camapanile as we see it now is a reconstruction finished in 1912 as the original building, completed in 1514, collapsed in 1902. It's original purpose was as a watch tower and after the belfry was added, the bells regulated the life oif the city.

Seen from the water, the imposing Punta della Dogana in Venice, Italy. This classical building sits between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca canal at the tip of an island which is diagonally opposite St Mark's Square. It was used for docking and as a customs house. However, the building as we see it now dates from 1682. Its use as a customs house lasted until the 1980s. Restoration took place in 2008-9 and this beautiful building is now an art museum.

The sun is gradually setting over Venice. Here we see on the left the island of San Giorgio Maggiore with the campanile of its magnificent Palladian church which dates from 1566 and the subject for many artists including Monet. It is now the HQ of the Cini Foundation Arts Centre with a noted library. Further on we can see the distinctive domes of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Here the Giudecca Canal, the Grand Canal and the Canale de San Marco meet in the Venetian Lagoon.

The imposing Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. This beautiful building stands on the Punta della Dogana between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal and is obliquely opposite St Mark's Square. This view is from the Grand Canal. It was consecrated in 1681 and was built as an offering for the deliverance of Venice from a plague that ravished the city in 1630. Its domes became an emblem of the city andit has been painted by artists such as Canaletto and Turner.
