The OG film vampire

Back in 2016 I produced a series of portraits based on the classic monsters. This is the first piece. The villainous Count Orlok, as portrayed by Max Schreck in the silent film Nosferatu. Whilst this character started out as a knock off of Dracula, Orlok and his iconic design has become something of an icon itself.

This is my Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror fan art. It shows Count Orlok standing in the doorway. It is done in my style, with added geometrical shapes and some skulls for the dramatic effect. A skull always makes a design more interesting!

Orlok Bauhaus design

The Nosferatu design is inspired by F.W. Murnau's German Expressionist classic Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror starring Max Shrek as the terrifying vampire Count Orlok. Released in 1922, the film was a thinly veiled adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula and was the subject of a successful lawsuit by the Stoker estate. Only a few prints survived yet still Nosferatu came to be widely regarded as a masterpiece. Werner Herzog remade the film in 1979 starring Klaus Kinski.

I love the scene in Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens after Count Orlok bites Ellen Hutter's "lovely neck." As Orlok slowly looks up, with his twisted claw wrapped around the head of his victim, he stares directly into the camera for a beat, which makes for one of the creepiest scenes ever. As I often do, I captured my own still of this scene for reference and tried to pay tribute to the moment by painting in a dark, minimal 2-tone feel inspired by the grim but stark look of the movie. To contrast the near-black brushwork, I created a graphic background with my signature gradient banding in purple. Then I fit everything into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.

My favorite scene in Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens is the creepy shadow on the wall as Count Orlok ascends the staircase toward his final victim; it is one of the most iconic images in film and perfectly captures the ambiance of classic horror. In tribute to the simplicity of this still, I kept the artwork as minimal as possible. To contrast the near-black brushwork of the silhouette, I created a graphic background with my signature gradient banding in greyscale. Then I fit everything into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.

Nosferatu does not like the sun... not one bit. I understand how he feels. This is my tiny homage to count Orlok portrayed by Max Schreck in the famous 1922 movie Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.

Just because you're a blood-sucking denizen of the night doesn't mean you have to have a bad attitude - are you a YESferatu or a NOsferatu?

For my Mod Pop Art tribute to the groundbreaking German silent horror film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens, I created a dark, minimal 2-tone feel inspired by the grim but stark look of the movie and painted my rendition of three of its most iconic images, then combined them into one piece. To contrast the simplistic near-black brushwork, I created a vivid colorful graphic background with my signature gradient banding in yellow/green/purple, a Halloween-like rainbow of sorts. Then I fit everything nicely into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.

Nosferatu. Does this word not sound like the midnight call of the Bird of Death? Do not utter it, or the images of life will fade - into pale shadows and ghostly dreams will rise from your heart and feed your Blood.
