Robert Paxton McCulloch formed McCulloch Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the city in which his grandfather made millions as an early pioneer of electric utilities and manufacturer of electric trolleys. McCulloch hired on a number of engineers at the firm, including Francis L. Colburn, who designed a simple, easy-to-install centrifugal supercharger. McCulloch began offering the superchargers as kits for Ford’s flathead V-8 engine, advertising them to truck owners as well as racers and owners of every day street-driven cars. The crankshaft-driven supercharger had a fixed 6:1 ratio and was seated horizontally between the carburetor and intake manifold. McCulloch first offered the kit in 1937 and by 1942, his sales topped $3 million.

Elgin boats, trailers, and outboards were sold by Sears, Roebuck and Co. but were built by a variety of manufacturers. The line of outboard motors were built by West Bend and later by Scott-McCulloch; boats were supplied by manufacturers such as Cutter, Whitehouse, Glasspar, and Arkansas Traveler. Trailers were made by companies such as Seminole in Florida. From 1960 on, Elgin offered only a two HP model built by West Bend, switching to a lineup primarily of outboards made by Scott. West Bend-made motors can be distinguished by a 571- serial number prefix; the Scott-made motors by a 574- prefix. In later years, the Elgin brand was dropped entirely and boats and motors were marked as Sears.

The original line-up consisted of vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant and bassist Les Pattinson, supplemented by a drum machine. By 1980, Pete de Freitas joined as the band's drummer. Their 1980 debut album, Crocodiles, went into the top 20 of the UK Albums Chart. After releasing their second album, Heaven Up Here, in 1981, the band's cult status was followed by mainstream success in 1983, when they scored a UK Top 10 hit with "The Cutter".

In the 1982 book Liverpool Explodes!, Will Sergeant explained the origin of the band's name: We had this mate who kept suggesting all these names like The Daz Men or Glisserol and the Fan Extractors. Echo and the Bunnymen was one of them. I thought it was just as stupid as the rest
