In 1996, a New Jersey high school girls' soccer team travels to Seattle for a national tournament. While flying over Canada, their plane crashes deep in the wilderness, and the surviving team members are left stranded for nineteen months. The series chronicles their attempts to stay alive as some of the team members are driven to cannibalism. It also focuses on the lives of the survivors 25 years later in 2021, as the events of their ordeal continue to affect them many years after their rescue.

They oxidise sugars and fats to produce energy in a process called respiration. A mitochondrion has two membranes, a smooth outer membrane and a folded inner membrane. The tangle (yellow) lies in the cytoplasm (green) of the cell, and consists of abnormal aggregates of the protein tau. In the healthy cell, tau stabilises microtubules in the cytoplasm. It is not known precisely how the tangles are formed, nor their impact on the neuron's function, but they are seen in a range of neural disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD), some forms of Parkinson's disease, and Supranuclear Palsy.

Zymogen is secreted as an inactive 'proenzyme', which is only activated once it reaches the intestine, to prevent self-digestion of the pancreas.

The virus particles have an enveloped outer coat, or capsid, bearing the proteins (green) haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which allow the virus to enter and leave host cells. As with all viruses, influenza cannot reproduce by itself, instead entering cells and hijacking their biochemical machinery to produce more copies of the virus. Flu usually causes lethargy, aching muscles, fever and nausea. Influenza B, however, is less virulent than influenza A, due to the limited host range and its slower rate of evolution (by 2 to 3 times).
