A stone wall built in the traditional manner displays structure and character

Taken as I was walking the small streets of one of the small villages outside of Paris, France. I noticed this little flowery plant just hanging on of the stone work of the fence wall. All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software. The church of St Mary the Virgin in the village of Hampstead Norreys in West Berkshire depicted here as a pastel drawing. This lovely church sits in the centre of the village next to the road which leads to Newbury. It's a Grade 1 listed Norman church close to the remains of a motte-and-bailey Norman castle. The church, dating from the C12th was largely rebuilt in the C13th. The tower is C15th.

Looking out from a window in the Alhambra Palace, in Granada, Spain to the tower of the church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra. We can see the Moorish architecture of the window with its patterned stonework contrasting with the later Christian church design. Both a citadel and a palace, the Alhambra was founded by Spain's Islamic rulers in 1238 and shows magnificent examples of medieval Moorish architecture. The image has a textured finish.

The elegant and stunning classical architecture of Venice seen through an archway not far from the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's Square. Venice is the capital of the Veneto region of Italy which developed into a city state between the C9th and C12th. It became a major and rich trading city and also developed as a centre for the arts and culture. Digital art developed from my original photograph.

The bridge over the River Thames at Abingdon in Oxfordhire, England. This bridge carries the A415 into the town, travelling from Dorchester-on-Thames. The bridge dates back to 1422 when the first construction was completed. In 1453 three new arches were built and then the whole thing was widened bit by bit in the C19th. It's really two bridges linked by Nags Head Island on which the public house in the image stands. This shows the northern section, the southern, named Burford Bridge, having a wider arch. Perhaps one the most iconic sights in Venice - the doorways of the canal-side mansions - the 'porta d'acqua'. These are usually constructed of limestone and like this one have a carved head on the keystone This one looks very Neptune-like! Also iconic are the mooring poles flanking the doorway - the 'pali da casade' or 'poles of the family' which are often painted in the family's colours.

A Bright Sunny Day In Windsor

The Baphuon Temple is part of the Bayon complex in Angkor Thom, itself within the overall Angkor Wat Archaeological Park. This image is taken in one of the passageways within the temple structure. The temple was built in the mid-11th century to honour the Hindu god Shiva, but later became a Buddhist temple.

On a small hill in Margam, South Wales, sits the long disused chapel known as Hen Eglwys or Capel Mair.

Chipping Campden, Cotswold District of Gloucestershire Chipping Campden is one of the loveliest small towns in the Cotswolds and a gilded masterpiece of limestone and craftsmanship. The main street curves in a shallow arc lined with a succession of ancient houses each grafted to the next but each with its own distinctive embellishments. Pevsner described Chipping Campden as ‘the best piece of townscape in Gloucestershire, arguably one of the best in England’. As the name suggests ("Chipping" means market or market place from the old English "Ceping"). Chipping Campden was one of the most important of the medieval wool towns and famous throughout Europe. While driving in Co, Clare, Ireland, I came across the ruins of an old church. It was off the beaten track, but a delight to find. Later I did some research to find that the church had been called St. John's, but I've no idea when it fell into ruin. From what I could tell the cemetery was still active, evidenced by the fact that many graves were located within the old wall, some even with fresh flowers. The day was wet and blustery with fresh winds off the nearby Atlantic. Even for the wildness of the day, the place was peaceful.

Like many cathedrals, St Albans Cathedral is the product of many generations of work. The present structure is mainly Norman in origin, but there are older Saxon elements and later Gothic construction. Included in the construction are Roman stone blocks, which were taken from the Roman fort that at one time existed just down the hill from the cathedral. Added to this are the many repairs over the centuries, so the cathedral exhibits many architectural styles. You can see in the image, for example, how the construction of the buttresses changes halfway along the nave. That said, I love the image because it rightly reflects how imposing the structure is.

A uniformed guard stands at attention in a historical stone corridor, possibly within a castle or an old military facility. The guard, wearing a tall furry hat known as a bearskin, is in a side profile view holding a rifle with a fixed bayonet. This image, originally captured on film in 1987, depicts a royal guard. A lot of Windsor Castle is open to the public, but this image is a peek into the royally private part of the castle. The lonely soldier—resplendent in his red tunic and bearskin hat—standing guard in front of his sentry box, the flagstones beneath his feet glistening with the wetness of the recent rain, and the magnificent stonework. I think it's a cool image; I hope you do too.

When walking around the old Roman city of Split, it's a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, some, as in this instance, built as tunnels through buildings. It's very quiet at night, so it's perfect for capturing moody shots cast against the very old buildings. I hope you enjoy this image.

This is an image of one of the the open galleries that line the outer walls of the Angkor Wat temple. The temple is enormous. Although we were there with many hundreds of others, it wasn't difficult to find incredible views, such as this, without another person in sight. Built about 900 years ago, it is an architectural tour de force, a remarkable testament to its builders, and today remains as an incredible engineering masterpiece. To walk through the complex is an awe inspiring experience, one that I won't forget. What I love about this image is the incredible depth; the vanishing point at the far end. Think of the engineering required to build something so straight, so square, all those years ago.

You will need to get there early to see Angkor Wat at its best. The early morning light brings tranquillity to this remarkably peaceful place. Of course, you are not alone. Angkor Wat is the biggest tourist attraction in Cambodia, it even appears on the national flag. But the place is so enormous that finding a spot without tourists is not difficult. The temple was originally dedicated to the Indian god, Vishnu, but became a Buddhist temple within a hundred years of its construction, which started during the early 12th century. This image is a view along the first inner gallery.
