Description: Gilbert Baker created the original gay pride flag in 1978, and it originally had eight stripes. The colors, in order, were hot pink to represent sex, red for healing, yellow for sun, green for serenity with nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit. In the years since the flag has been reduced to six colors: the flag no longer uses hot pink, and the turquoise and indigo have been replaced with royal blue.* Various theories say that pink and turquoise were dropped because of fabric shortages at one time. Another cited is that when the flag was to be displayed in split fashion, on light poles on Market Street, it needed to have a maximum of three stripers per side. The International Bear Brotherhood Flag was designed to represent the bear subculture within the LGBT community. Craig Byrnes created the Bear pride flag in 1995. The colors of the flag are meant to include the colors of the furs of animal bears throughout the world, not necessarily referring to human skin and hair color tones: Dark brown, orange/rust, golden yellow, tan, white, gray, and black. The flag was designed with inclusion in mind. The gay bear culture celebrates secondary sex characteristics such as the growth of body hair and facial hair, which is typically considered a “bear” trait.*
