In the 1920s, the sands adjoining the village of Pendine (Carmarthenshire, South Wales) were the UK's equivalent of Daytona Beach or Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA. Pendine's 6 miles of firm, flat sand were ideal for world land speed record attempts. Sir Michael Campbell in 'Bluebird' and Welshman John Godfrey Parry-Thomas in his Leyland Special BABS between them raised the record from 146 mph in 1924 to 174 mph in 1927. In a further attempt at breaking the record in 1927, Parry-Thomas's car crashed on a 170 mph run, and the driver lost his life.
