Description: Alnwick Brewery is an award-winning brewery in the heart of Northumberland which first traded in the 1860s and again are now brewing in Alnwick. Owned and managed by Harry Hotspur Holdings a niche investment company with a vision to “preserve the past and build the future” for niche food and drinks businesses in Northumbria. Alnwick Brewery first started to make and sell beers in the 1860s from a brewery operating from the center of Alnwick, the capital of Northumberland, in England. The brewery was officially registered in September 1890 when they acquired Mason Brothers. It had a somewhat colourful history before being acquired in 1978 by the major Scottish brewer Dryboroughs who eventually closed it down in 1986.
Description: We had been staying in Alnwick, Northumberland, England, primarily to see Holy Island and then Bamburgh Castle. When leaving, we were driving when we noticed this delightful old church, St Michael's. Wikipedia tells me that it was built in the mid-1500s, so late middle ages, but apparently there's evidence of much older places of worship at that site. In England, the building is a Grade 1 Listed structure, meaning it is a "structure of particular architectural or historical interest deserving of special protection'. In this image, I was drawn to the colour of sandstone set against the blues in the sky. Then there's the stepped buttressing around the tower and the very welcoming doorway to the vestibule.
Description: This is an image of the barbican entrance into Alnwick Castle, in Alnwick, England. Barbicans were a common defensive feature of castles in the middle ages as they served as a way of defending the main entrance. Those entering the castle would be contained, their numbers limited by the space within the inner and outer gates, and overlooked by defenders on the walls surrounding the barbican. It would have been a dangerous place to enter if you bad intentions.
