A constellation is a group of stars that appear to be close together but are actually very distant from each other. Many ancient civilizations drew imaginary lines between these stars and created virtual silhouettes in the sky. And with them great mythological stories. This constellation has several versions of its origin in Greek mythology: It is a Charioteer, it is about Mirtilo, son of Hermes and Fetusa, coachman of Oenomaus. The latter's daughter, Hipodamía, had many suitors but her father, to get rid of them, challenged them to a chariot race. In Greek mythology, Auriga is often identified as the mythological Greek hero Erichthonius of Athens, the chthonic son of Hephaestus who was raised by the goddess Athena. Erichthonius was generally credited to be the inventor of the quadriga, the four-horse chariot, which he used in the battle against the usurper Amphictyon, the event that made Erichthonius the king of Athens.

Flaming star nebula (also known as IC 405, Sh2-229) in the constellation Auriga is both emission and reflection nebula, surrounding the bluish star AE Aurigae, which is travelling through gas clouds with a speed of 200 km/s. The nebula is about 5 light-years across. Picture taken with refractror telescope (800mm focal length), astronomy monochrome camera, RGB and H-alpha narrowband filters. Total exposure time: 7 hours 15 minutes.

IC 405 (also known as the Flaming Star Nebula is an emission/reflection nebula in the constellation Auriga, surrounding the bluish star AE Aurigae. Picture taken with newton 600mm f/4 telescope and modified DSLR camera. Total exposure time 5 hours 40 minutes.

Also know as Caldwell 31, the Flaming Star Nebula resides in the Auriga constellation located on this 9 by 12 inch acrylic painting created 2021.
